Today we commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Bay View massacre, when the state militia fired into a crowd marching in support of an eight-hour day, killing seven people.

That was 125 years ago.  But as recently as 1941, the Wisconsin Manufacturers Assn., forerunner of Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce, was still running nespaper ads like this one, warning what could happen if people only worked 8 hours and the state offered “wage insurance for idle men,” otherwise known as unemployment compensation.

Wisconsin’s business lobby gets high marks for consistency.  Just last month, the big bucks boys successfully got a bill passed to override a Milwaukee ordinance that would have — horrors! — required employers to offer paid sick leave.

Is this a great country or what?
