The WARP 75 is a small handheld device engineered by Barneveld, Wis. company Quantum Devices that emits reddish light. The device contains 288 light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that, using special technology, project an immense amount of light without generating heat. And that light, according to the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, has the power to heal.
In a recent clinical trial that included 20 cancer patients from the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, the device proved effective in reducing the severe mouth sores (oral mucositis) that are sometimes caused by chemotherapy and radiation treatments. The sores, besides being extremely painful, can prevent patients from eating.
In the trial, nurses held the device up to the left and right cheeks and neck areas of patients for just a few minutes each day. The red light has long wave-lengths that “stimulate cells to aid healing,” according to a news release from the hospital.
Others patients at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital who received the same treatments also fared better than patients who didn’t.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is currently reviewing the WARP 75 before approving its widespread sale.
