Just where do all those police officers and firefighters live?
A map produced by the City of Milwaukee (and obtained recently by NewsBuzz) shows concentrations of police and fire department employees (both sworn and non-sworn employees) in the Southwestern and Northwestern areas of the city.
A bill in the state Legislature sponsored by suburban Milwaukee legislators would overrule a City Civil Service rule requiring sworn police officers and firefighters to live within the city limits. The bill would allow them to also live in adjoining counties. Mayor Tom Barrett and Common Council President Willie Hines strongly oppose the legislation, arguing the state is meddling in an issue best left to local control.
Which aldermen have the greatest concentrations of public safety employees? According to the maps, that would be Joe Dudzik of District 11, son of former city police union president Jerry Dudzik, Bob Donovan of District 8, an ally of the police and fire unions and chairman of the Common Council’s public safety committee, Terry Witkowski of District 13, former director of the Milwaukee Police Department’s Safety Commission, Jim Bohl of District 5 and Robert Puente of District 9, a former MPD captain.
Nancy Olson, chief information officer for the city, says the map and another showing the concentration of general city employees (both posted here) were produced in January using about 96 percent of the 3,050 fire and police employees and 3,800 general city employees.
