Texas prosecutors have filed human trafficking charges against a couple they allege kidnapped a woman at their Milwaukee home and forced her into prostitution in New Orleans and later Dallas.

Police say Nicholas L. Tolbert, 29, invited the 21-year-old woman to the couple’s home “and then locked her in and refused to let her leave,” according to The Dallas Morning News.

Tolbert, along with girlfriend Elika T. Brown, 27, then took the woman to New Orleans, where she was told to work in strip clubs and charge $250 for sex acts. All the money went to Tolbert, according to police. Failure to make $500 a day meant “she would be denied privileges, including watching television or being in Tolbert’s presence,” according to the newspaper.

The woman’s first attempt to flee failed and Tolbert allegedly held her head underwater until she agreed to stay and work for him.

The couple later took the woman to Dallas, where they rented a room in an extended stay hotel. Tolbert agreed to allow her to leave the room on her birthday (May 3), and she called police.

Tolbert and Brown were booked into Dallas County Jail last week on felony human trafficking charges.

In Milwaukee County, Tolbert was convicted in 2001 of exposing his genitals to a child and in 2003 of possession of marijuana.
