The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is running this story:
Support for new rail transit systems dips below 50%
If you just read the headlines, you would think that the number must be close to 50%, but in actuality, it’s not close, only 41% support choo-choo’s for the Milwaukee area, and that number is dropping.
Wisconsin is so cash strapped, but Democrats want to spend over a billion dollars, with many millions of dollars each year for continued operations of three train systems that will never come close to being used enough to pay for themselves.
If Democrats get their way, (read: elect Tom Barrett as Jim Doyle’s third term) $283.5 million will be spent to set up the KRM choo-choo which will run between Kenosha, Racine & Milwaukee. $810?million for a not-so-high-speed rail line between Milwaukee and Madison. and another $95.8 million for the Tommyville Choo-Choo, which will run from the lower-East Side into downtown. Of course these figures are never met, you can probably add 30% for cost overruns. Then add millions more each year in tax dollars from all over the state to keep these things running. Interestingly, the poll only covers the Milwaukee Metro area, I wonder what someone in Rhinelander thinks of paying millions of state tax dollars so a few dozen people a day can ride a choo-choo from Milwaukee to Madison?
Not unexpectedly, Mayor Tom Barrett couldn’t be reached for comment.
