Tomorrow, the Milwaukee county board’s parks committee will consider a request from the state Department of Natural Resources to build a pedestrian bridge and small pavilion in Mitchell Park.

The bridge, which would slope upward from the Menomonee River Valley to the park’s elevation, would link the developing Hank Aaron State Trail to the park, where the pavilion would serve as a trailhead. Railroad tracks would pass underneath the bridge.
According to the DNR, it’s building an extension to the trail that will run through the river valley from 37th Street to 27th Street, where it will intersect with Mitchell Park. The DNR is also asking for permission to build a paved walkway in the park linking the trail to the 27th Street viaduct.
All construction would be completed using state and federal funds. Once the bridge, pavilion and walkway are completed, however, their maintenance would become the county’s responsibility.
The county parks department has approved the DNR’s plans and is asking the county board to grant the agency the easements it needs to begin work.
Plans call for the Hank Aaron State Trail to run from the Underwood Creek Greenway in Wauwatosa along the river valley to the Downtown Milwaukee area. Several miles of trail have already been built.
