A gay-straight student alliance at UW-Waukesha is hosting a prom this Saturday for gay and lesbian high school students – or anyone else, young or old, who missed out on their high school prom.
The “Pride Prom” dance, which features a DJ, professional photographs and refreshments, runs from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are $5 and free for UW-Waukesha students.
But the event, funded by the UW-Waukesha African American Union and the campus’ Organization of Latin American Leaders, is extending a special invitation “to area high school seniors and their dates.”
“Although proms generally aren’t held on college campuses, the Pride Prom provides an opportunity for gay teens, interracial couples, or anyone who may not have felt comfortable at their high school prom to dress up and attend a campus dance,” says a university press release.
Although some openly gay students may prefer an alternative prom, others participate in the traditional ones offered by their schools: In 2008, an openly gay male student ran for prom queen at Washington Park High School in Racine (and won a nomination from his peers) but was told by the school district’s administration he could only be nominated for prom king (which he had also been nominated for).
