Delegates and other visitors to this weekend’s state GOP convention in Wisconsin Dells favored Herman Cain, former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza, in the rapidly evolving field for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

Cain formerly announced his candidacy on Saturday in a rally in Atlanta. In a video released by his campaign, Cain enunciates a “New American Dream” built on constitutional conservatism and reducing the national debt. The video plays up his Tea Party roots with pictures of a Washington D.C. Tea Party rally.
Cain, who also served as chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City in the late 1990s, has never won elected office. He lost a bid for U.S. Senate in Georgia in 2004.
In the convention straw poll, conducted by WisPolitics.com, Cain won 80 out of 301 ballots cast by delegates, alternate delegates and other guests, beating out two Midwestern competitors; Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, who has since stepped out of the race, won 50. Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty came in third with 35 ballots.
Cain, a longtime political activist, recently cleared out his “Hermanator” political action committee and founded the more serious-sounding Friends of Herman Cain.
Critics say he’s not a serious contender for the nomination. During an interview on Fox News Sunday, Cain said he supported Palestinians’ “right to return” to Israel, a position he later reversed in a statement.
