A small Wisconsin city is seeking proposals to develop a half-acre riverside lot in its central business district. How much for the property? That’ll be $1, please.
You could, hypothetically, pay more, but the City of Chilton, a town of about 4,000 people just west of Manitowoc in Calumet County, really isn’t interested in your money.
“The city will select a proposal based on business that would occupy the building, the building’s size and its construction materials, not on lot price,” says the city’s announcement. “Thus, a business owner or developer could acquire the lot for as little as $1.”
The city has labeled the area where the lot is located the “Uptown District.” For the half-acre city-owned lot adjoining the Manitowoc River, the city would prefer a two-story brick building, but its leaders are open to other suggestions.
“If almost giving the land away attracts a development that is complimentary to our Uptown, the better off the city is,” says city development director Shawn Reilly.
Despite the low asking price, the city says times in Uptown are hot. Other new developments in the district: a parking lot, a 39-unit senior housing development and two other businesses with a third opening in May.
