The number of sexual assaults reported to police increased in both Milwaukee County and statewide in 2010, according to a new state report.
In Milwaukee County, assaults reported rose from 946 in 2009 to 977 in 2010, an increase of 3 percent. Statewide, they rose from 4,627 to 4,857, an increase of 5 percent, according to the state Office of Justice Assistance.
The agency notes that sexual assaults are vastly underreported. It estimates that only about 19 percent of the assaults that occur in Wisconsin are reported to law enforcement.
Of the cases reported to police last year, about 53 percent resulted in arrests, down from 58 percent in 2009.
The most common offenses alleged were, in descending order, forcible fondling, forcible rape and statutory rape. Most victims were children or young teenagers, according to the report – two thirds of victims were 15 years old or younger.
Milwaukee County had the 23rd highest sexual assault rate out of 72 counties. The highest rate was in Menomonee County, a rural, impoverished county containing the Menominee Indian Reservation; it was almost four times the state average.
