A Milwaukee dress maker is in hot water after allegedly failing to deliver on several orders for bridesmaid, flower girl and First Communion dresses.
In a case filed earlier this week in Milwaukee County Circuit Court, state Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen accuses Joyce D. Gray of Milwaukee of violating state consumer protection laws.
According to the complaint:
Gray ran a fashion design and dress making business that took orders through a website, www.myflowergirls.net, which is no longer functioning. (As of Wednesday, the website said, “Server 01 is Alive,” but there were no other pages to access.)
Seven customers from New York, Oklahoma, Michigan, Missouri and Illinois, between 2006 and 2008, filed complaints with the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection alleging Gray had demanded pre-payment by check, money order or credit card but never delivered the dresses, which were needed for weddings and First Communions. In at least one case, a customer said Gray provided a fake shipping number to prolong the illusion the dresses were on their way.
Later, when the customers tried to get their money back, they couldn’t. In some of the cases, the customers were able to reverse Gray’s charges to their credit cards.
Customer filed about 65 complaints against Gray with the Better Business Bureau between 2005 and 2008.
In 2008, the department ordered her to make prompt deliveries and refunds, but the department continued to receive complaints.
