A New York-based recruiting firm says Milwaukee, believe it or not, is the fifth-best city in the country to find a job.

The top cities for job seekers, as defined by the Ajilon Professional Staffing ranking, aren’t necessarily those with the most job openings: The study also took the cost of living into account. Sure, there might be a wealth of jobs in Manhattan, but could you afford to live there?
Minnesota’s Twin Cities topped the ranking. The other top cities, in descending order, were Austin, Texas, Salt Lake City, Boston, Milwaukee, Richmond, Va., Raleigh-Durham, N.C., Baltimore, Pittsburgh and Dallas.
The study also drew upon federal jobs data. All the cities have unemployment rates well below the national average of 8.9 percent. In Milwaukee, in the most recent reporting (Dec. 2010), the rate was 7.3 percent.
Ajilon says it also ranked cities using “insights from its regional market branches” and other factors, including “diversity of industries in the city … the range in size of companies offering employment and level of higher education among (a city’s) residents.”
