A new ranking by the British life sciences news magazine The Scientist places the Medical College of Wisconsin as the 19th best institution for postdoctoral research in the U.S. – and the sixth highest among universities and medical schools.

The online survey, which received 2,881 responses from scientists, asked them to rate the postdoctoral institution they had worked for. The ranking included all 76 U.S. institutions that received at least five ratings. The scientists rated them on the quality of training and mentoring, the career opportunities they offer, the funding available for research and other factors.
MCW ranked 19th, but was sixth highest among universities and medical schools. Those that ranked higher were Vanderbilt University (10), Emory University (11), the University of California at San Francisco (13), Washington University (17) and the University of Arizona (18).
Postdoctoral academics are those that have recently acquired a doctorate degree and are furthering their education through research. They work at research institutes ranging from medical schools such as MCW to positions at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and private labs.
“The postdoctoral years are a critical time in a budding scientist’s career,” says the magazine. MCW says it currently has about 200 such budding researchers.
Privately-funded research centers dominated the ranking. The Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research in Cambridge, Mass., topped the list of U.S. institutions; the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods, Mass., was second; and the Van Andel Research Institute in Grand Rapid, Mich., was third.
