The percentage of Milwaukee County adults living in households with only cell phones – no land line phones – has almost doubled since 2007, according to a new federal report.
As of mid-2010, according to statistics released last week, almost one in three adults in the county (31 percent) live in “wireless-only” households, up from about 16 percent in 2007. The national average for mid-2010 was lower: almost one in four adults (24 percent) were in wireless-only households.
But statewide, there was little difference: Wisconsin is close to the national average at about 25 percent.
The report notes that states, even within geographic regions, vary widely on the number of wireless-only households. Most of the states with high concentrations were in the South and West. Arkansas had the highest concentration (35 percent) and Rhode Island had the lowest (about 13 percent).
The report offers no reasons for such wide variation. The data was drawn from the annual National Health Interview Survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
